Teaching Sight Words
Step #4
The 'Dolch List' is the stardard for sight word lists. These words are used in 50% to 75% of school text. Most reading curriculums use it to teach reading in Kindergarten and First Grade. 'Automaticity' is the automatic naming of... letters, sounds and sight words. This automatic naming is the 'brass ring' of learning to read easily and fluently. ( Look on Suggested Articles and Websites Tab. ) Just as you and your child practiced the letters and letter sounds with 'Super Sound Cards' you will practice the sight word list to make it automatic. We start with the pre-primer list which is the first list to be learned.
Tell your child that there are some words that we can not 'sound out'. They do not follow the letter/sound rules. We will just have to learn these words by practicing. Get a stack of 3x5 index cards and write one word on each card in bold, black letters. Hold up the cards one at a time. Read the word out loud and have your child repeat after you. Practice this drill 10-15 minutes a day until the words are learned. Shuffle the pack of cards each time you practice the sight word drill.
