Emergent Readers

I planted a bag of nasturtium seeds in our backyard this May.  The "early birds" popped up within 10 days.  I eagerly attended to their needs (a little watering) and rejoiced at their progress. They thrived throughout this  beautiful summer, and then my garden was cleared in early October. In  late October,  I had a little surprise.  Back in the corner of a bare flower bed emerged a fully formed nasturtium seedling (one of the original seeds).  It could have been planted at a deficit (too deep, too dark, too small), but it managed to find it's way to the surface for some days in the warm autumn sun.
So it is with our emergent readers. Just like nature's mighty seeds, a child's brain is  packed with the raw material for amazing growth and learning potential.  Some readers will emerge rapidly and with ease, others will lay dormant, struggling for a time.  Celebrate your child's accomplishments with enthusiasm!  Be patient and nurturing during times of drought, these days will pass.  Your child will emerge a reader in his or her own special timetable.

Sincerely,  Diana
